  11. MACINTOSH(R) CONNECTIVITY SYSTEM

  16.     (TUCSON, AZ -- September 14, 1992) -- 
  17. Artisoft, Inc. announced today that its 
  18. LANtastic for Macintosh connectivity system has 
  19. begun shipping. This system is available in two 
  20. versions: a complete hardware/software solution 
  21. and a software-only kit. The complete solution 
  22. includes LANtastic for Macintosh software, a 
  23. Local Talk(TM) adapter card, cable and user's 
  24. manuals for the software and adapter, priced at 
  25. $799. The software-only system includes 
  26. LANtastic for Macintosh software, a user's 
  27. manual and driver programs for EtherTalk(R), 
  28. Local Talk and Token Ring adapters, priced at 
  29. $599.
  30.     "As more and more Macintosh computers are 
  31. being integrated into the corporate environment, 
  32. the need for Macintosh support is becoming 
  33. increasingly evident, " commented Jack Schoof,

  35. first PC local area networking company to offer 
  36. a total peer-to-peer solution for Macintosh 
  37. connectivity."
  38.       The LANtastic for Macintosh system 
  39. provides a transparent integration of Apple(R) 
  40. Macintosh(R) computers and PostScript(R) 
  41. printers into the LANtastic network operating 
  42. system environment and enables real-time file-
  43. sharing between both environments.
  44.     The LANtastic for Macintosh system 
  45. establishes a PC to serve as a dedicated gateway 
  46. between the Macintosh and LANtastic networks. PC 
  47. servers on the LANtastic network are set up as 
  48. logical drives on the gateway PC and appear as 
  49. slightly modified computer icons to users on the 
  50. Macintosh network. Thus, Macintosh users see PC 
  51. files and directories as they would standard 
  52. Macintosh files and directories and can use the 
  53. Chooser to select printers attached to the 
  54. LANtastic network.
  55.     Slightly different for PC users, the 
  56. LANtastic for Macintosh system establishes a 
  57. dedicated gateway PC where users can access 
  58. PostScript printers on the Macintosh network and 
  59. can see Macintosh files saved onto the gateway 
  60. PC's hard drive. This can all be done from their 
  61. own LANtastic interface.
  62.     Both PC and Macintosh users can access the 
  63. other files that use the same file format [i.e. 
  64. Microsoft(R) Word and Excel or Aldus(R) 
  65. PageMaker(R)]. File attributes and record-
  66. locking are supported in both directions. In 
  67. addition, any PostScript-compatible printer -- 
  68. even non-AppleTalk(R) interface printers such as 
  69. Hewlett Packard's LaserJet(R) series -- can be 
  70. shared simultaneously among all workstations, 
  71. both Macintosh and PC.
